About the course

An idea is not a business

A business is an idea with the numbers worked out. Before you invest time and savings, you need to know who buys, how much they pay, what it costs to serve them and when the money comes in.

Starting up is not about having an idea. It is about finding out, as cheaply as possible, whether anyone will pay for it and whether the numbers add up. Most failed projects began with the product, not the customer, or mistook selling for getting paid.

The business model canvas runs through the whole course. Each topic fills in one part, and the last one asks you to build your own from start to finish.

Who it's for

Who is this course for?

You have an idea

And you don't know where to start. Here you follow the path in the order the decisions are made.

You have already started

And you need to bring order to what you do: who you sell to, what you offer and whether the numbers add up.

You work for someone else

And you want to understand how the person running the business you work in thinks.

Learning outcomes

By the end, you will be able to

Describe your customer

Describe a specific customer and the problem they are willing to pay to solve.

Shape your value proposition

Formulate a value proposition and check how well it fits that customer.

Run the numbers

Calculate your break-even point and tell profit apart from cash.

Funding and legal basics

Know the funding routes and the basic legal and tax decisions, and know what to ask an adviser.

Compete and grow

Analyze an industry and decide how to compete and how to grow without running out of cash.

Build your model

Build a complete business model on the canvas and defend it.

Syllabus

The full syllabus

Ten topics, in the order the decisions are made: from the customer to the numbers and, at the end, your own business model.

  • Topic 0 · Entrepreneurship as a way of life
What starting up means beyond setting up a company, and three myths worth leaving behind.
  • Topic 1 · Business organization: how companies are structured
A company from the inside: management, departments and the indicator each one is measured by.
  • Topic 2 · The customer: the starting point
Understand their needs, segment the market, pick a niche and describe who uses, who decides and who pays.
  • Topic 3 · The value proposition: what can we do for the customer?
Why they should choose you, whether it fits (SWOT and TOWS), and what it takes to deliver.
  • Topic 4 · The value chain: how does our product reach the customer?
Which activities create value and how the product reaches the customer: partners, channels and relationship.
  • Topic 5 · Revenue streams and cost structure: how do we make money?
Market size, how you charge, what it costs to serve the customer and why profit is not cash.
  • Topic 6 · Funding and legal matters: the back room of a business
Starting with debt or with partners, and the legal side: legal form, taxes, patents and trademarks.
  • Topic 7 · Strategy: scaling the value proposition
Vision, mission and goals; SWOT, TOWS and the five forces; and how to grow without running out of cash.
  • Topic 8 · Marcom: winning customers
Brand, positioning, price and communication, plus the acquisition funnel: what a customer costs and what one is worth.
  • Topic 9 · The business model
The whole course on one page: you build your business model canvas and put it to the test.

Learning by doing

Try it: an exercise from the course

This is the break-even simulator from topic 5, in Spanish like the rest of the course. Move the fixed costs, the price and the variable cost per unit, and see how many units you need to sell to cover your costs.
