About the course

Stop nodding along. Start understanding.

You work on the Internet all day, yet hardly anyone can explain what happens between typing an address and seeing the page. That gap is expensive: poor buying decisions, dead-end conversations with the technical team and total dependence on whoever does understand.

Four blocks cover the pieces behind every digital service: how information travels, how the Web works, what a server is and what open source means.

You come away able to read a hosting quote, make sense of an incident and ask the right questions.

Who it's for

Who is this course for?

Profile

Non-technical professionals who work alongside technology teams: senior management, project management, marketing, administration or procurement.

New to tech?

It also suits you if you are starting out in a technical role and want a solid, ordered foundation before you specialize.

Where you are today

You decide, budget or deal with whoever builds your website without knowing its infrastructure. Here, every term is explained the first time it appears.

Learning outcomes

By the end you will be able to

Trace a web request

Explain the full journey of a web request, from the browser to the server and back.

Know what you are buying

Tell domain, DNS, hosting and server apart, and know what you are paying for in each case.

Recognize ports and protocols

Understand what a port and a protocol are, and recognize the most common ones.

Compare physical, virtual and cloud

Compare physical, virtual and cloud servers on cost, control and risk.

Tell open licenses apart

Distinguish the main open source licenses and the obligations each one carries.

Syllabus

The full syllabus

Four blocks and eight lessons: from the journey of a request to open source licenses.

How the Internet works

Who talks to whom, and how a request gets from your browser to the server: IP, DNS and ports.

The Web: domains, hosting and HTTP

What a website needs to exist and be seen: a domain, DNS records, hosting, HTTP and HTTPS encryption.

Servers: from bare metal to the cloud

Inside a server: Linux, SSH, physical, virtual or cloud machines, and the bare minimum on backups and protection.

Open Source: free software and its licenses

What licenses allow and require, how a community works and how publishers make a living. Example: Odoo.

Learning by doing

Try it: this is a course exercise

Match each service to its port: web, email, SSH, DNS. Then decide which ports to leave open on three servers. It is one of the course's three exercises, in Spanish, and you can try it right here without signing up.
